Electrical Interconnection Between Libya and Italy

As part of the implementation of the National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Strategy, which requires appropriate steps and measures, especially concerning the infrastructure and projects necessary for transmitting generated electrical energy, a high-level meeting was held in Rome, Italy, on February 2, 2024. This meeting is part of the memorandum of understanding signed between Libya and Italy to cooperate in multiple areas, including electrical interconnection.
The Libyan delegation included:
• Eng. Osama Al-Hadi Al-Darat, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Electricity and Renewable Energy Affairs and Head of the Electrical Interconnection Committee between Libya and Southern European countries.
• Dr. Abdel Salam Suleiman Al-Ansari, Chairman of the Renewable Energy Authority and Member of the Committee.
• Eng. Asil Younis Artima, Chairman of the Renewable Energy Holding Company and Member of the Committee. From the Italian side:
• Giuzeina Di Foggia, Chairman and CEO of the Italian Electricity Company (Terna).
• Representatives from the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Protection, as well as from the Italian electricity company.


The meeting focused on reviewing several proposals that would enhance the success of the ambitious electrical interconnection project, which will enable Libya to play a pivotal role in energy transmission between Africa and Europe while exploiting the vast renewable energy resources available. The Head of the Electrical Interconnection Committee emphasized the need to intensify future meetings, stressing the importance of inviting the Italian side to attend the upcoming meeting, which will be arranged in Libya. This collaboration aims to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries and support renewable energy projects in Libya, contributing to the achievement of development and investment goals in this vital sector.
