The Joint Committee for Overseeing the Transition to Renewable Energy Holds Its Second Meeting at the General Electricity Company of Libya Headquarters

As part of the implementation of Circular No. (30) of 2025 issued by the Secretary-General of the Cabinet Office, regarding the transition to renewable energy sources and the enhancement of energy efficiency within public institutions, the Joint Committee for Monitoring the Implementation of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Transition Measures held its second meeting this morning at the headquarters of the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL).

The meeting was chaired by Eng. Abdullah Hammouda, General Manager of GECOL, and attended by:

  • Eng. Aseel Younes Mohamed, Member of the Board of Directors of the Renewable Energy Authority,
  • Dr. Yousef Al-Naas, General Director of the Libyan Center for Solar Energy Research and Studies,
  • Mr. Saeed Al-Seifao, representing the Technical Cooperation Office at the Ministry of Planning,
  • Dr. Ali Bin Zaitoun, General Director of the Libyan Center for Standards and Metrology,
    alongside several department directors from both GECOL and the Renewable Energy Authority.

During the meeting, several key points were reviewed and discussed, including:

  • Establishing a comprehensive national framework for implementing the Cabinet’s decision on the transition to renewable energy.
  • Enhancing institutional coordination and ensuring technical and financial integration among relevant entities.
  • Developing a practical implementation mechanism to enable a gradual shift toward solar energy, as a safe, sustainable, and economically viable strategic option.
  • Preparing a clear national roadmap with defined timelines and implementation phases that contribute effectively to achieving the goals of the national energy transition.

Participants emphasized the importance of unifying efforts and strengthening cooperation among all concerned institutions to accelerate the pace of the energy transition and ensure efficient implementation at all stages.

This meeting comes as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources, reaffirming its commitment to the National Strategy for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, which serves as a comprehensive roadmap for promoting the use of clean energy sources and improving energy efficiency — contributing to the realization of a scientific, technical, and economically sustainable energy transition in Libya
