The Renewable Energy Authority participated in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) held at the Expo 2020 Dubai in early December 2023. The Renewable Energy Authority is the official institution responsible for renewable energy and energy efficiency in Libya.
Statements from the Director of the Board Affairs Office: Engineer Mohamed Dakhel Saidon, Director of the Board Affairs Office at the Renewable Energy Authority, emphasized that implementing and developing environmentally friendly projects and increasing the share of renewable energy projects are central to addressing the impacts of climate change. He also praised the excellent organization of the conference in the UAE.
Future Projects: The Director revealed Libya’s plans to implement several solar and wind energy projects with a combined capacity exceeding 4000 MW. The goal is to increase the share of renewable energy in the national grid to 20% by 2035, in line with the national renewable energy development strategy.
Initiatives and Plans: The strategy also includes the launch of the "GO GREEN" initiative, along with a national plan targeting a 5 to 10% reduction in electricity consumption by 2035. Geographic Location and Renewable Energy Benefits: The Director highlighted Libya’s strategic location, which positions it as a potential leader in renewable energy. The country’s vast solar belt offers high sunlight levels, while wind speeds create opportunities for wind farms.
Electrical Interconnection with Europe: Over the past two years, Libya has formed a high-level committee to prepare for an electrical interconnection project with Malta, Italy, and Greece. A connection with Malta has already been determined, and work is underway to finalize routes for connections with Italy and Greece, which will contribute to connecting Libya to the European continent.
Attracting Investments: Saidon expressed hope that the electrical interconnection with the three countries would serve as an effective tool to attract investors and companies, facilitating diverse projects and enabling electricity exports to Europe and neighboring countries.
These initiatives demonstrate Libya's commitment to transitioning to renewable energy and contributing to addressing the challenges of climate change through international collaboration.
