Participation of the Renewable Energy Authority in the African Workshop

As part of its collaboration with various local and international stakeholders, Mr. Nasser Eddin Mohammed Al-Burqali, a board member of the Renewable Energy Authority, participated in the African Workshop organized by the National Agency for the Development of the Use of Algerian Energy (APRUE) in collaboration with the African Energy Commission (AFREC) and the United for Energy Efficiency (U4E) program of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The workshop took place in Algiers, Algeria, from December 19 to 21, 2023, under the title "Energy Efficiency in Lighting." The event was inaugurated by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Algeria.

Workshop Objectives: The workshop focused on improving energy efficiency in the building sector in general, and specifically in the field of lighting. Representatives from African countries and experts from regional and international bodies participated.

Exchange of Experiences: Over two days, participants shared their experiences regarding energy efficiency policies and strategies implemented in their countries, as well as the challenges these policies faced and how they overcame them.

Challenges and Ambitions: The workshop also addressed the general energy situation in African countries, the barriers to economic and social development in the energy sector, and the importance of cooperation between African nations to bridge the energy gap. Discussions emphasized the need to meet the growing energy demand, which is increasing by about 10% annually due to population growth and the rising demand for energy services.

Environmental Challenges: The workshop also covered environmental challenges related to energy issues in Africa, such as desertification caused by the use of f irewood as fuel, and the health impacts of using some traditional forms of biomass.
