Renewable Energy Authority Delegation Explores Egypt’s Experience in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

A delegation from the Renewable Energy Authority (REAOL), headed by Eng. Nasr Eldin Emhammad Al-Barqali, Member of the Authority’s Board of Directors, and comprising Board Members Eng. Mahmoud Al-Qallai and Eng. Osama Abufarda, along with a number of directors of departments and offices at the Authority, in addition to representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Libyan Audit Bureau, and in cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), conducted an official visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The visit aimed to gain insights into Egypt’s experience in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and the electricity sector, while promoting the exchange of expertise and experience in these fields.

Since the beginning of the visit, the delegation’s program included a series of visits and meetings with a number of Egyptian institutions, organizations, companies, and energy projects. These included the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy (MOERE), the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC), the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), the Egyptian Electric Utility and Consumer Protection Regulatory Agency (EgyptERA), and the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE).

During these visits, the delegation was briefed on the mandates, areas of responsibility, practical experiences, strategies, and plans of the host institutions in the energy sector. The delegation also attended a series of technical and visual presentations covering work mechanisms, project development, management and operation, as well as technical and institutional experiences in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and grid integration.

The meetings also included discussions on prospects for cooperation between the Libyan side and the Egyptian institutions. The two sides reached an initial understanding to work toward concluding memoranda of cooperation, with the aim of strengthening the exchange of expertise and technical knowledge, as well as cooperation in the field of training.

The delegation also visited the S1 500 kV substation in the New Administrative Capital, in addition to a number of renewable energy projects, including Zafarana Wind Farm 7, with a total capacity of approximately 120 MW; the Zafarana Solar Power Plant, with a capacity of 50 MW; and the Amunet Wind Power Project, developed by AMEA Power in Ras Ghareb, with a capacity of 500 MW.

These field visits provided the delegation with an opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the implementation and operation of solar and wind energy projects, as well as their management, operation, and maintenance mechanisms, and the practices adopted to harness renewable energy resources and support the stability of the electricity system.

The delegation also visited the factories of EGEMAC, a company specializing in the manufacturing of prefabricated substations and electrical equipment.

The visit reflects the Renewable Energy Authority’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and exchanging expertise with specialized institutions and organizations, while benefiting from regional experiences in developing the renewable energy sector and enhancing the efficiency of the energy system. It also supports Libya’s efforts to expand the use of renewable energy resources and advance its objectives in the field of sustainable energy.
